About Rotterdam

Rotterdam is the birthplace of Erasmus, the Renaissance humanist and theologian. He gives his name to many institutions, including the University (Erasmus Universitiet), and the beautiful Erasmus Bridge (Erasmusbrug).

The heart of Rotterdam was almost completely destroyed by the Luftwaffe in World War II. After initial crisis re-construction from the 1950s through to the 1970s, the centre of Rotterdam has become the site of ambitious new architecture including the amazing Markthal – a covered market housing many small food retailers, cafés and restaurants.

And yet much of the old 19th century city still remains, round the quaint Delfshaven, Oudehaven and Haringvliet docks, teeming with restored barges, sailing and steam boats.

Dominated by water, Rotterdam is divided in two by the river Nieuwe Maas. This has given rise to the nickname “Gateway to the World”. Sheltering behind dikes, large parts of the city are below sea level. The port of Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe.

This combination makes Rotterdam completely different from all other cities, and presents breathtaking photo opportunities! Come and see for yourself…

And in July Rotterdam hosts the North Sea Jazz Festival, the biggest indoor jazz festival in the world. The festival actually presents many music styles, from traditional New Orleans jazz to Swing, bebop, fusion, blues, gospel music, funk music, soul music and drum n bass.

Bad weather

The weather in the Netherlands can be unpredictable, especially in Autumn and Winter.

But it seldom rains the for whole day. If the rain is torrential the workshop will be cancelled, but if it is not heavy the tour will go on regardless.

Photographers are hardy folks, and stormy skies and wet pavements present some of the most exciting photo opportunities!

Cancellation policy

But whatever the weather, you may cancel up to 1 day before for a full refund.

And if you are not satisfied with the tour for any reason we will also refund your money in full.
